Commands of Christ

December 30, 2016

I find it interesting that scholars number the commands of Christ.  Some say there are 49, another 50, then 125 and even up to 642 commands.  The 50 that I have observed sets the goal high enough for me. "Love your enemies" creates enough challenge in itself for me to achieve. I also see the dilemma of this list creating a legalistic pursuit that would drive me further from the Lord than toward Him. As if to say, My Lord is standing over me saying "do this or that" and "why can't you just obey," nagging me to follow Him.

But our Lord is not like that.  His message is love and He gently directs my path and leads me through the difficult times. He teaches me in such a way that creates in me a deep desire to serve Him....to do my best in living for Him and to know He loves me with an everlasting and unconditional love!  I know He has the best in store for me.

When He commands us not to judge others, I am convicted, not harassed by Him.  When He says go the second mile, I am challenged to do better!  When He says to seek first His kingdom, I recognize my misguided steps and turn toward His goals.  There is nothing He commands that I can ever say is mean or harshly demanding, but each command moves me to follow Him better than I have the day before.

My problem is to keep His Word constantly before me so I won't drift or miss the blessings He has for me.  Missing His revelation in one of His commands might mean I've failed to see something in me that may create a problem for another.  If we love Christ...we will keep His commands! I look forward in sharing His commands to His church in the coming weeks ahead.  Please pray that this message series will change our hearts to follow our Lord privately and corporately.
